What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

IBS, also known as spastic colon, is a condition in which the intestinal muscle goes into spasm. There can be many causes including: Food sensitivities, caffeine, and other stimulants including, alcohol, tobacco and drugs; malabsorption of sugars, the lactose in milk, high fructose content in fruit juices and dried fruit and sorbitol and xylitol used in products; or as the result of a bacterial imbalance in the colon.

Symptoms include alternating diarrhoea and constipation, distended colon, gas, pain, nausea and loss of appetite. Stress can exacerbate the condition. The most common food offenders include wheat and corn cereals, dairy, coffee, tea, chocolate, citrus fruits, onions and potatoes. Eating a high fibre diet is recommended to help alleviate symptoms. (IBS) is a common, but difficult condition to detect.

This is why it may continue for years without any other general deterioration in your health. IBS affects the nerves that control the muscles in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract making them too active. This can cause your GI tract to become overly sensitive to foods, stools, gas and stress which may result in abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. There are three types of IBS depending on the symptoms which predominate. There is diarrhoea predominant (IBS-D), constipation predominant (IBS-C) and IBS with alternating stool patterns (IBS-A).

There is much debate about the causes of IBS. Many Health Care Professionals argue that the causes of IBS are unknown or that there are multiple causes, which are difficult to identify. This is why IBS is such a common problem in society as the condition often goes untreated. The symptoms of IBS are not only inconvenient and embarrassing but can restrict you from enjoying the quality of life you deserve!
